Mothers and Strangers Essays on Motherhood from the New South Samia Serageldin Lee Smith 9781469651675 Books Reviews

  • This is a lovely collection of essays. Their diversity is a study on motherhood in its many forms. Don’t make the mistake of thinking this a schmaltzy ode to my dear, sweet mother collection though. The writers attempt to capture their authentic mothers and, though written under an affectionate veil, these women are not placed on pedestals. The authors explore the effects of time, place, and circumstances on the women they came to know and love in way that reveals much about the human condition. The southern cadence of the writers adds an enjoyable flavor to the essays. The book made me want to give my mom a big hug.
  • This collection of essays by southern writers really hit the spot for me. There's something mysterious about our mothers and their pasts. No matter how we try, it's impossible to disentangle their identity as woman and "my mother." I was really impressed with the variety of essays and the varying ages of the authors.
